Leaf of Kaempferia galanga

Kaempferia galanga

Kaempferia galanga is an herbaceous species with pale-green, fragrant rhizomes. It usually has two leaves (measuring up to 10cm across by 15cm long) that spread flat on the ground. Kaempferia galanga‘s inflorescence is sessile and ephemeral–lasting only a single day–with the flowers being white with purple spots on some of the petals.

‘Tara’ ginger lily has been the subject of debate among Hedychium taxonomists: Hedychium coccineum ‘Tara’ or Hedychium gardnerianum ‘Tara’ or a hybrid? This photograph was submitted as Hedychium gardnerianum ‘Tara’, while I’ve chosen to use what we’ve settled on at UBC with the plants in our collection, Hedychium ‘Tara’.

Roscoea sp. in flower in UBC's Asian Garden

Photographed yesterday evening in the Asian Garden, Roscoea is one of the few members of the Zingiberaceae (the ginger family) that can be grown outside of tropical / subtropical climates, owing to the fact that it is a high altitude plant in its native range.
