Many species of lilies are commonly called “tiger lilies”, but this species is perhaps the best one to bear that moniker. After all, before the plant taxonomists determined it should properly be named Lilium lancifolium, the scientific name most in use for this species was Lilium tigrinum.

The inflorescence of Agapanthus 'PMN06'

Hybridized by the Brisbane-area plant breeders at Pine Mountain Nursery, Agapanthus ‘PMN06’ is better known by its commercial name, Agapanthus QUEEN MUM™. The goal with the breeding program was to generate an Agapanthus flower with bicoloured blue-and-white tepals.

Today’s photograph is unrepresentative of the size of giant chain fern, whose leaves may reach a length of 1.7m (or 5.5 feet). Perhaps surprising to some local readers, this tropicalesque fern species is native from British Columbia south to Mexico’s Baja California.
