UBC Botanical Garden’s forums have been operating for almost eighteen years. The most frequented part of the forums is the plant identification section, which frequently has worldwide participation in solving these mysteries. Lila Pereszke from Hungary identified the plant in today’s images, which was photographed by the Scotland-dwelling Sheila during her travels to Mauritius!

Although Acer rubrum grows in UBC Botanical Garden as part of its significant collection of maples, here’s a photo of a plant coming into flower from across the continent in its native range. Acer rubrum, or red maple, is among the most abundant native trees of the eastern United States.

Aesculus glabra is most commonly known as the Ohio buckeye, but also goes by the names of American buckeye and fetid buckeye. As the common names suggest, it’s native to North America, significant to Ohio, and emits unpleasant odors!

I started this entry as I sat underneath this tree in UBC Botanical Garden on a sunny, warm afternoon. Not bad for a place to do some work! I was left with no choice but to get some pictures after noticing the beautiful light hitting the tree and illuminating the flowers, leaves, and bees.
