Aptly named “butterfly flower” in Chinese for its appearance, Iris japonica is native to Japan, Myanmar (Burma) and China. Other common names for this species include fringed iris and shaga.

Ethiopian acanthus is native to the highlands of Ethiopia, where it grows in a Mediterranean-type climate with free-draining soil. Apparently used for fencing around vegetable gardens in Ethiopia, it has been introduced into ornamental cultivation in Europe and the USA in recent years.

Pelargonium tetragonum, or the square-stemmed pelargonium, is a shrubby member of the Geraniaceae found in an inland strip of dry habitats paralleling the southern coast of South Africa. Its preference for dry, rocky and well-draining soils helps classify it as a xerophyte.
