Halophytes, or salt-tolerant plants, are found in a number of environments: seashores, mangrove swamps, salt marshes & swamps, and, as in today’s photographs, saline semi-deserts. Ignored or disdained as a “weed tree” for many years by forest industrialists, Pacific or western yew received an unsustainable amount of interest in the last few decades of the 20th century due to the presence of paclitaxel in its bark.

Although few wildflower species were blooming, the late August / early September trip to the Siskiyous still held some floral highlights for me. One was encountering and photographing this narrow-range endemic, Epilobium oreganum, or Grants Pass willowherb.

Erigeron stanselliae is endemic to a small part of Oregon in the western Siskiyou Mountains. Though we (likely) won’t be collecting in the area where this species occurs, this is the general region we are working in for the next couple weeks.

Collomia grandiflora, or grand collomia, is native to much of western North America. It is an annual species; depending in part on ecological factors, it can range in height from 10cm to 1m (4in. to 40in.) and have one to many flowering head clusters terminating the stem and branches.
