Dragon’s mouth orchid, like several other orchid species, is subject to mutations in flower colour (including the lack of pigmentation). The pink-coloured flowers in the second photograph have the typical colouration.

Late autumn cones of Larix decidua

One of the deciduous genera of conifers, the ten or eleven species of Larix are native to the temperate-cold zones of the northern hemisphere. Larix decidua, in its autumn foliage in these photographs, is native to higher elevations of southern Europe in a range spanning from France to Ukraine.

Native to Peru, Tropaeolum peregrinum is widely cultivated as an ornamental. In tropical areas, it perennates, persisting from year to year. In harsher climates, including Alaska where this photograph was taken, it is grown as a horticultural annual.

The diminutive bog cranberry or small cranberry is wide-ranging across northern Europe, Asia, and North America. As one of its common names implies, it is a species of bogs–and also fens, muskeg, and arctic-alpine tundra.

Ramadan concludes at sunset this evening. For many Muslims, the associated fasting extends to the discouragement (if not prohibition) of using toothpaste and mouthwash. Instead, a miswak, or tooth-cleaning stick, is the prescribed dental tool. Most often, these teeth-cleaning roots or twigs originate from Salvadora persica, sometimes commonly known as the toothbrush tree.

Wild thyme or creeping thyme is a subshrub or short-statured shrub native to Europe and perhaps western Asian and northern Africa; the range information on the IUCN Red List for Thymus serpyllum is contradictory. This species is not typically a culinary thyme (which is most often Thymus vulgaris).
