Calochortus amabilis stands out against a rock and post-burn landscape

Calochortus amabilis

Published by Daniel Mosquin on April 24, 2020

Although species of Calochortus have been featured from time to time (most recently, Calochortus leichtlinii), it’s been an omission to have never shared one of the species with nodding and globular flowers, also known as the fairy-lanterns.

The three-petaled Philesia magellanica

Philesia magellanica

Published by Daniel Mosquin on March 23, 2020

A highlight of last year’s trip to Chile was seeing all of the members of the Philesiaceae in the wild–all two of them! The viny Lapageria rosea has previously been featured on BPotD; this is its scrambling shrub-like relative, austral bellflower or coicopihue.

Close-up of the flower of Lilium lancifolium

Lilium lancifolium

Published by Daniel Mosquin on July 25, 2018

Many species of lilies are commonly called “tiger lilies”, but this species is perhaps the best one to bear that moniker. After all, before the plant taxonomists determined it should properly be named Lilium lancifolium, the scientific name most in use for this species was Lilium tigrinum.

Toxicoscordion fremontii, or star lily

Toxicoscordion fremontii

Published by Daniel Mosquin on June 6, 2018

Over eighty percent of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park burned in October of last year. Perhaps the opportunity to see post-fire wildflowers in the stark landscape is what enticed today’s photographer, Sandy Steinman, to visit the area in early April.

Flowers of Tulipa 'Sorbet'

Tulipa ‘Sorbet’

Published by Daniel Mosquin on May 7, 2018

Instead of counting sheep to fall asleep, plant enthusiasts should count tulip cultivars. There are upwards of 2400 cultivars listed in the RHS Horticultural Database. It is doubtless that there are many more, including some that have been lost to cultivation.
