Inflorescence of Orthosiphon aristatus var. aristatus

Orthosiphon aristatus var. aristatus

Published by Daniel Mosquin on May 31, 2019

Cat’s whiskers seems like a fitting common name for this taxon. Another name is Java tea, which gives hints to both its native distribution (tropical Asia and Queensland) and how it is consumed as a medicine.

An Assortment of Colours of California Wildflowers

California Flower Medley

Published by Daniel Mosquin on February 27, 2019

Here is a memory from 2017’s bloom in the Californian desert within Joshua Tree National Park. I’ve heard this year is also turning out to be an exceptional one.

Salvia viridis ‘Pink Sundae’

An early autumn photo of Caryopteris × clandonensis

Caryopteris × clandonensis

Published by Daniel Mosquin on October 4, 2018

Bluebeard is named for the shape and colour of the flowers rather than the grisly French folktale. This visually-charming and bee-friendly shrub has found its way into many xeriscape gardens, including one at the site of today’s photograph, the Summerland Ornamental Gardens.

Inflorescences of Thymus serpyllum

Thymus serpyllum

Published by Daniel Mosquin on May 23, 2018

Wild thyme or creeping thyme is a subshrub or short-statured shrub native to Europe and perhaps western Asian and northern Africa; the range information on the IUCN Red List for Thymus serpyllum is contradictory. This species is not typically a culinary thyme (which is most often Thymus vulgaris).

Flower Medley in Querétaro, México

Querétaro Flower Medley

Published by Daniel Mosquin on February 20, 2018

It is a long road to Xilitla from San Miguel de Allende in México; six hours of driving without stopping. Stops are however necessary, not only for enjoying the plants along the way at the height of wildflower season, but also for the calls of nature. Sometimes the two are combined.

Salvia microphylla, photographed in the wild

Salvia microphylla

Published by Daniel Mosquin on February 1, 2018

I wavered in my identification of today’s plant. Is it Salvia microphylla (blackcurrant sage) or Salvia greggii (autumn sage)? Complicating matters is that the two have overlapping ranges in the mid- to high-elevations of eastern Mexico, and, apparently, the two species will hybridize.
