Sambucus is a small genus of shrubs and perennials found primarily in temperate and subtropical forested areas of Europe, Asia, and North, Central, and South America. Erigeron stanselliae is endemic to a small part of Oregon in the western Siskiyou Mountains. Though we (likely) won’t be collecting in the area where this species occurs, this is the general region we are working in for the next couple weeks.

Today’s taxon was originally going to be posted as Abies densa (the name on the label), but after reviewing the identification via Conifers Around the World, I’m nearly certain this is instead Abies delavayi.

Another species of South American origin today: Santa Cruz water lily is native to Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay, where it grows in shallow waterways with little to no flowing water.

From the relatively few conservatories I’ve visited, I have the impression that it is mandatory for every one of these institutions to have lollipop plant or golden shrimp plant on display.
