The disintegrating fruiting heads of Anemone occidentalis
This is another plant with a suite of common names, including the literal “western anemone”.
I prefer the whimsical “tow-headed baby”, referring to the whitish-blonde colour caused by the long hair-like persistent styles attached to the individual fruits (perhaps more readily seen in this photograph of Anemone occidentalis via CalPhotos.
